Australian High Commissioner in Cyprus

High Commissioner Fiona McKergow has been serving as the Australian High Commissioner in Cyprus since January 2022. Bringing a comprehensive and diverse portfolio to her role, she has a proven track record in foreign policy, trade, humanitarian affairs, and development, particularly focused on the Pacific and South Asia regions.

Prior to her current appointment, High Commissioner McKergow worked in the Multilateral Banks Unit of the Office of the Chief Economist within the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) of the Australian Government from July 2021 to December 2021. Before that, she was the Acting Consul General at the Australian Consulate General in Kolkata, India, from July 2020 to March 2021. She has also served as the Director of various sections within DFAT, including the Bangladesh Nepal & Bhutan Section (2017-2020), the Microstates Section (2013-2017), and the Climate Change, Environment & DRR Section (2011-2013).

Her government service extends beyond DFAT. From 2008 to 2011, High Commissioner McKergow was the Director of Kyoto Protocol & DCU Sections within the International Division of the Department of Climate Change. She has also held directorial roles in the Department of Agriculture, specifically in the areas of trade and market access, and in the Middle East, South Asia & Africa Section. She has previously worked with international world heritage assessments, child adoption policies, environmental management in Australia’s external territories, fisheries policy, and offshore refugee processing.

Throughout her career, she has collaborated with diplomatic networks, industry leaders, and other government agencies on various initiatives, focusing on climate change policy and programming, live export trade, market access, trade negotiations, and biosecurity issues.
