Yannis Bassias has 35 years of experience in the energy sector. He advises on offshore projects in the SE Mediterranean and on carbon dioxide storage. Furthermore, within the framework of the Greek Development Transition Plan (GDTM), he assists municipalities of Western Macedonia on energy and mineral resources. From 2016 to June 2020 served the Greek State as President & CEO of HHRM (Hellenic Hydrocarbon Resources Management), handling the attribution and supervision of hydrocarbon E&P activities of Total, Exxon, Repsol, Edison, Helleniq and Energean, and implemented the European offshore safety regulations. He was member of the Committee of the National Energy and Climate (ESEK) Greek policy group between 2018 and 2020. He planned several axes for the implementation of a natural gas network and heat pumps in mountainous communities of Western Macedonia and contributed in the FSRU project of Volos in Central Greece. Also assisted in circular economy projects of electricity production from biomass, pumped water storage in lignite basins and small dams for irrigation and electricity. From 2012 to 2016 he worked in several EEZs of the Indian Ocean, Equatorial America, and West Africa on geological and legal aspects of frontier hydrocarbon basins. As CEO and President of the Georex group, from 1991 to 2012, he demerged the hydrocarbon assets from the service activities establishing subsidiaries in France, United Kingdom, Tunisia, and the Republic of Congo. He managed projects for the CIS, Esso, Elf, SNPC, Total, and evaluation teams in Texas and Colombia. Before joining the energy sector, he was appointed Associate Professor in the Marine Geology Lab of the National Museum of Natural History in Paris and the Free University of Berlin. He graduated from the Kapodistrian University in Athens, holds a PhD from the University of Pierre et Marie Curie in Paris and was Council of Europe Fellow in Paris from 1980 to 1983 and Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Research Fellow in Berlin from 1985 to 1986.
